About the Tibetan Language

Tibetan is the language of the Tibetan plateau and the Tibetan exile community, with roughly 6 million speakers across the Tibet Autonomous Region of China, parts of Nepal, Bhutan, and northern India (particularly Dharamshala, the seat of the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan government-in-exile). The US Tibetan-American community is small but politically and culturally active, with concentrations in New York City (Queens has a sizeable Little Tibet), Minnesota, and the Bay Area. Our Tibetan translation work is dominated by USCIS asylum documentation, Tibetan Buddhist religious and educational documents, and the family records that come with the exile community's complex documentation history.

  • Primary regions: China, India, Nepal, Bhutan
  • Language origin / family: Tibet
  • Estimated speakers: 6 million
