About the Tagalog Language

Tagalog is the basis for Filipino — the standardised national language of the Philippines — and the everyday language for around 28 million native speakers, with another 50 million using it as a second language. In the United States the Filipino-American population is around 1.7 million, centred on California, Hawaii, Nevada, and the New York metro area, with strong presence in healthcare, nursing, and the US military. Translation work is mostly civil and immigration-related: Philippine birth and marriage certificates, NBI clearances, academic transcripts, and USCIS paperwork. Tagalog and Filipino are written in the Latin alphabet.

  • Primary regions: The Philippines and Filipino-American communities across the USA — especially California, Hawaii, Nevada, Texas and Illinois
  • Language origin / family: Austronesian, Malayo-Polynesian language family
  • Estimated speakers: Around 80 million Filipino speakers worldwide
