About the Ndebele Language

Ndebele refers to two related Bantu languages: Northern Ndebele (isiNdebele), spoken by around 5 million people in Zimbabwe; and Southern Ndebele (isiNdebele), one of South Africa's eleven official languages, spoken by around 1.1 million people in Mpumalanga and Gauteng. Both are closely related to Zulu and Xhosa. Our Ndebele translation work is rare; civil documents from Zimbabwe and South Africa are typically in English and routed accordingly.

  • Primary regions: Zimbabwe, South Africa
  • Language origin / family: Southern Africa
  • Estimated speakers: 3 million
