About the Masai Language

Masai (Maa, Maasai) is a Nilotic language spoken by around 1.5 million people in southern Kenya and northern Tanzania — the language of the Maasai people, traditionally pastoralists. The US Masai-speaking community is essentially non-existent; Kenyan and Tanzanian civil documents are typically in English or Swahili and routed accordingly. Our Masai translation work is rare and typically tied to cultural or anthropological projects.

  • Primary regions: Kenya, Tanzania
  • Language origin / family: East Africa
  • Estimated speakers: 1.2 million
