About the Mandinka Language

Mandinka is a Manding language and the most-spoken language of The Gambia, also widely used in Senegal, Guinea-Bissau, and parts of Mali. Around 1.3 million people speak it. It's closely related to Bambara and other Manding varieties — see our Mandingo page for the same language under another name. The US Mandinka-speaking community is part of the broader West African immigrant population in the New York metro area and Atlanta. Our Mandinka translation work is mostly USCIS family-reunification and asylum paperwork.

  • Primary regions: Gambia, Senegal, Guinea
  • Language origin / family: West Africa
  • Estimated speakers: 2 million
