About the Kikuyu Language

Kikuyu (Gikuyu) is a Bantu language and the largest indigenous language of Kenya, spoken by around 8 million people primarily in the Central Highlands around Mount Kenya. The US Kikuyu-speaking community is part of the broader Kenyan-American population in the DC metro area, Texas, and the Boston-to-Washington corridor, with strong representation in nursing, academia, and IT. Our Kikuyu translation work is occasional — Kenyan civil documents are typically in English (the country's official administrative language) and routed accordingly, though academic and religious documents may be in Kikuyu.

  • Primary regions: Kenya
  • Language origin / family: Central Kenya
  • Estimated speakers: 8 million
