About the Karenni Language

Karenni (Red Karen, Kayah Li) is a Sino-Tibetan language related to but distinct from Karen, spoken by around 100,000 people primarily in Myanmar's Kayah State. Like the broader Karen population, the Karenni community has been heavily impacted by displacement from Myanmar, with significant US refugee resettlement in cities like Buffalo, Houston, Saint Paul, Phoenix, and Indianapolis. Our Karenni translation work is overwhelmingly USCIS asylum and refugee paperwork, alongside the healthcare and school documents tied to recent refugee resettlement.

  • Primary regions: Myanmar
  • Language origin / family: Kayah State, Myanmar
  • Estimated speakers: 0.5 million
