About the Herero Language

Herero is a Bantu language spoken by around 200,000 people, primarily in central and northern Namibia and parts of Botswana and Angola. The Herero people have a particular historical significance as survivors of one of the early 20th century's most extensive genocides (the 1904-1908 Herero and Namaqua genocide under German colonial rule). Our Herero translation work is essentially non-existent in normal operations; Namibian civil documents are usually in English (the country's official language) or Afrikaans.

  • Primary regions: Namibia, Botswana
  • Language origin / family: Namibia
  • Estimated speakers: 0.3 million
