About the Gujarati Language

Gujarati is one of the most established Indian languages in the United States. The Indian state of Gujarat is its origin, but well over a million Gujarati-Americans now live and work here — concentrated in New Jersey (Edison, Jersey City), Houston, Chicago, the Bay Area, and metro Atlanta. The community runs much of the country's independent hotel and motel sector, so we see a steady mix of business translation alongside the usual civil documents: birth certificates, marriage records, school transcripts, and USCIS paperwork. Gujarati is written in its own script, distinct from Hindi's Devanagari.

  • Primary regions: India (Gujarat state), United States, United Kingdom, Canada and global Gujarati diaspora communities
  • Language origin / family: Indo-European, Indo-Aryan language family — descended from Sanskrit
  • Estimated speakers: Over 55 million speakers worldwide
