About the Greek Language

Greek is the official language of Greece and Cyprus, with roughly 13 million speakers worldwide — and one of the world's oldest continuously written languages. The Greek-American community is around 300,000 strong, centred on Astoria (New York), Chicago, Boston, and Tarpon Springs (Florida). Most of our Greek translation work is civil and genealogy-driven: Greek birth, marriage, and baptismal records translated for US courts, for university credential evaluation, and for descendants of early-20th-century emigrants applying for Greek citizenship by descent. Greek uses its own alphabet, which is also the basis for Cyrillic.

  • Primary regions: Greece, Cyprus and Greek-American communities in New York, Massachusetts, Illinois, Florida and California
  • Language origin / family: Indo-European, Hellenic language family — one of the world's oldest written languages
  • Estimated speakers: Around 13 million speakers worldwide
