About the Frisian Language

Frisian is the closest living relative of English among the Germanic languages, spoken by around 500,000 people across small communities in the northern Netherlands (West Frisian, the largest) and northwestern Germany (North Frisian and Saterland Frisian). The US Frisian-speaking community is essentially genealogical — descendants of 19th-century Dutch-Frisian emigrants who settled in parts of the Midwest, particularly western Iowa. Translation requests are rare and typically tied to Dutch civil records that happen to include Frisian-language elements.

  • Primary regions: Netherlands, Germany
  • Language origin / family: Frisia
