About the French Language

Most French translation work we handle in the United States comes from two places: business between American companies and partners in France, Belgium, Switzerland, or Quebec, and immigration paperwork from francophone Africa and Haiti. French has around 300 million speakers worldwide and is one of the United Nations' six official languages. Quebec French in particular has its own legal and civil-document conventions, so we match each project to a translator who knows the variant the receiving authority expects. Louisiana French and Maine French are also recognised heritage variants spoken by smaller US communities.

  • Primary regions: France, Belgium, Switzerland, Canada (Quebec), parts of Africa, the Caribbean and French-speaking communities in Louisiana, Maine, Vermont and New York
  • Language origin / family: Indo-European, Romance language family
  • Estimated speakers: Around 300 million speakers worldwide
