About the Eskimo Language

Eskimo is an outdated umbrella term for the indigenous peoples of the Arctic — and their languages — extending from eastern Siberia across Alaska, Canada, and Greenland. Modern usage prefers the more accurate names: Inuit (and the Inuit languages including Inuktitut, Inupiaq, and Kalaallisut), and Yupik (a separate branch including Central Alaskan Yup'ik). When clients request "Eskimo translation" we identify which specific language is needed — see our Inuktitut and Yupik pages for the languages we handle most often. Most are written using either the Latin alphabet or Inuit syllabics.

  • Primary regions: United States, Canada, Greenland, Russia
  • Language origin / family: Arctic
