About the Berber Language

Berber (Tamazight) is a group of closely related languages spoken by around 25 million people across North Africa — primarily in Morocco and Algeria, plus parts of Tunisia, Libya, Mali, and Niger. The Berber name covers several distinct varieties including Tashelhit, Tamazight proper, and Riffian, each with its own speaker community. The US Berber-speaking community is small but growing, with concentrations in New York, parts of the Mid-Atlantic, and college towns near linguistic-anthropology programmes. Berber can be written in three different scripts — Latin, Arabic, and the indigenous Tifinagh — depending on country and document type.

  • Primary regions: Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya
  • Language origin / family: North Africa
  • Estimated speakers: 30 million
