About the Assamese Language

Assamese is the official language of the Indian state of Assam in the country's northeast, with around 15 million speakers. It's closely related to Bengali but distinct in script and vocabulary, and the two are not interchangeable for official translations. Most US Assamese speakers are recent professionals — Assam's tea, oil, and academic sectors send a steady stream of skilled workers to US companies and universities. Our Assamese translation work is a small but steady mix of civil documents (Indian birth and marriage certificates from Assam), academic transcripts, and the occasional asylum-related document. Assamese uses its own script, a close relative of Bengali script.
